At Sprig + Fern Brewing Co. in Richmond, the month of March feels much the same as the lead in to Christmas as a child. The brewery – and the fourteen Sprig + Fern Taverns – have a real buzz in the air knowing that the fresh hops we’re world famous for in the Nelson Tasman region are almost ready for harvesting.
As soon as the hops are at their best and we finally get the call from the local hop farmers with the go-ahead, Tracy and the team are straight into the van, on the road, and before long are bagging up the biggest and best hops to bring back for our fresh hop beer. With the unique advantage of being so local to these farms, it’s a matter of only minutes until those unbeatably fresh flavours are in the brew and working their aromatic magic.
As you can imagine, this annual pilgrimage to the local hop farms is a major highlight for our brewers when they select and harvest the hops for our multi-award-winning Harvest Pilsner™.
Sprig + Fern’s Harvest Pilsner™ is a fresh hop beer with a legendary status, both locally and nationally, having been brewed faithfully for many years (and picking up more than a few awards along the way). As much as our brewers are buzzing to get it underway each harvest, we know our customers are even more excited to give it a try – and we feel safe in saying that the 2023 Harvest Pilsner™ will not disappoint!
This year, we’ve opted for a marriage of Riwaka™ and Motueka™ hop varieties – the perfect hops for Pilsners, which ooze tropical and citrus notes and the zest of lime. Just delicious – and, as Master Brewer Tracy Banner describes it, “very moreish”.
This is the second of our three fresh hop beer releases planned for 2023. It’s available on tap, online, and in selected stores for a very limited time from today – best served fresh, so don’t snooze on this legendary drop.
