2020 New World Awards
They have done it again! Sprig & Fern achieving ‘Top 30’ for their Scotch Ale, second year in a row.
Sprig & Fern Brewery’s Scotch Ale is the brew that won the favour of the judges, described by the judges as having “Great depth and complexity” and “sweet with lovely, subtle smoky character”.
More than 600 beers and ciders produced by 100 breweries from around the world were entered, making this year’s awards the most hotly contested yet. The 2020 New World Beer & Cider Awards were judged by a panel of 25 independent experts using criteria including technical excellence, balance, mouthfeel, and most importantly, drinkability. The competition was tough and New World says that judges commented on the stunning quality of entries across the board.
Sprig & Fern Brewery Sales & Marketing Manager Zoie Bryce says that winning an award like this again is just incredible. “We were just jumping with excitement when we heard the news, to win once is great but twice! It’s such an achievement for our Sprig & Fern family and we couldn’t be any prouder” says Bryce.
2019 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards
Sprig & Fern were awarded a total of 7 medals, matching our 2017 effort.
This included a Gold medal for Smoked Bock, a Silver medal for Doppelbock and 5 Bronze medals for Chocolate Porter, Spiced Blond, Saison, Porter and British Best.
Most importantly Tracy, our amazing Master Brewer and owner was awarded a second guild honour, an Honorary Fellowship to add to her 2014 Honorary Member accolade.
This is the Guild’s highest honour and is awarded sparingly to recognise the high level of achievement of individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the Brewers Guild of New Zealand.
2019 AIBA Awards
Sprig & Fern had a very pleasing result at the 2019 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA).
Celebrating 27 years this year, the AIBA is the largest annual beer competition in the world judging both draught and packaged beer.
This year the AIBA attracted 2594 entries from 402 breweries – a 19 per cent increase on 2018.
Incredible result to get International recognition for 4 of our beers at the 2019 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA).
2019 New World Awards
Sprig & Fern Brewery has added another significant success to its list of accolades with today’s announcement that we have two placings in the 2019 New World Beer & Cider Awards Top 30 beers and ciders list.
Scotch Ale and limited release Doppelbock are the brews that won the favour of the judges, described by the judges as “absolutely outstanding” and “an elegant drinking experience”.
The quality, consistency, and drinkability of entries is higher each year and therefore this particular accolade, which will see both products supplied to all New World stores nationally in an 888ml glass bottles, reinforces the teams achievement in continuing to supply you with consistent and quality brews day in and day out.

2018 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards
Sprig & Fern Brewery are celebrating a remarkable night at the 2018 New Zealand Brewers Guild Awards, held in their home town of Nelson.
The Sprig & Fern team brought home the largest medal haul in the brands history, a staggering 13 medals across a range of awards categories which included medals for many of the recently released glass varieties including West Coast IPA, Tasman Reserve, Soiree, and Doppelbock.
Master Brewer and Owner Tracy Banner, who is celebrating her 35 years in the brewing industry this week, was deservedly recognised receiving the Morton Coutts Trophy for Innovation and Achievement in the Brewing Industry. “Being consistently awarded at the Brewers Guild of New Zealand annual awards truly showcases that our core values of quality and consistency remain paramount within our team” she said, “but being personally recognised was truly humbling”.
It was later in the evening that Sprig & Fern Brewery were also announced as the 2018 Champions in Packaging, awarded on aesthetics, product information, utility (ease of use, style) and innovation. Throughout a 2017 rebrand project, with design agency Inject, the Sprig & Fern team were conscious that the finished product needed to not only look stunning on shelf but also assist the palette expectations for experienced and new consumers alike including being able to successfully work across the extensive range of beers and ciders.
2017 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards
The 2017 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards was held in Christchurch.
Showcasing another stellar year for consistency, Sprig & Fern were awarded 7 medals, including one gold for Fern Lager. Pilsner, Rakau Pilsner, Scotch Ale, Porter, Tasman Reserve and Wai-iti all secured bronze medals.
2016 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards
This year’s awards were held in Auckland. Tracy, Ken and the brewing team headed up to the City of Sails for the big event.
A record 88 NZ breweries entered and a total of 950 beers were judged and once again, the Sprig & Fern Brewery had a rewarding night, receiving 8 medals and most importantly, a BEST IN CLASS TROPHY!
Thrilled to have received a Best in Class Trophy (having previously achieved runner-up for Champion Brewery on two occasions), Best Bitter took out the top honours for BEST BRITISH ALE with this category being a hotly contested trophy with a wide range of beer styles included such as Pale Ales, Porters, Scotch Ales and Stouts, amongst others.
2015 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards
The Brewers’ Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards is an international competition now in its ninth year.
With an ever-growing number of entries from New Zealand and around the world, this year 858 beers were pitted against each other and judged by a panel made up of 25 nationally and internationally qualified judges.
The Sprig & Fern Brewery came away with a record number of 12 medals, beating last year’s 11. Among these medals was a fourth gold for Harvest Pilsner and a gold for Wai-Iti Lager, a beer that is less than a year old.
2014 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards
The Brewers’ Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards is an international competition, with an ever-growing number of entries from New Zealand and around the world.
Beers were rated against a style guide for each category for aroma, colour, bitterness, flavour and presentation, and judged by a panel made up of 25 national and internationally qualified judges. A total of 61 gold, 121 silver and 169 bronze medals were awarded this year.
The Sprig & Fern Brewery Team were well amongst the medals again, with 11 beers and ciders awarded, and also enjoyed a very special moment when Tracy Banner was made an Honorary Member of the Brewer’s Guild in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Brewing Industry.
2013 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards
This year’s Brewers Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards attracted a record number of entries.
More than 540 entries were received from around 60 commercial brewers in New Zealand, as well as entries from international breweries in North America, Europe and Australia.
The Sprig & Fern Brewery again had a great night, with 11 beers and ciders being awarded medals, meaning we were jointly the most awarded brewery in New Zealand!
2012 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards
The Brewers Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards were held in August at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre.
The Awards attracted 460 entries with only 147 being awarded medals. As usual, local and international beers were judged over a three day period by a panel of experts.
On top of our 5 medals, the Sprig & Fern Brewery was awarded New Zealand Champion Brewery Runners up, missing out on the top spot by a mere one point!
2011 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards
The Brewers Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards are an international beer competition featuring world leaders in the beer judging arena.
Local and international beers are judged over a three day period by a panel of experts led by the hugely respected Head Judge Brian Watson.
In 2011 a record 465 entries from New Zealand and overseas breweries were received.
The Sprig & Fern Brewery was the most awarded brewery in the country, with an outstanding haul of ten medals!
